Welcome to Veterinary Homeopathy. I’m a licensed veterinarian (UC Davis 1985) who, after my first class in classical homeopathy with Dr. Richard Pitcairn in 1992, began using this unique system of medicine to treat animals with mental, emotional, and physical diseases.
In 1993, I became a Certified Veterinary Homeopath with the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy.
Although the body is able to heal and return to the natural state of health without intervention much of the time, there are other times when assistance is needed. Homeopathic medicine offers this assistance in a gentle, curative manner using homeopathic remedies (tiny energetic doses of various natural substances).
Homeopathic treatment is quite different from conventional medical treatment (allopathic). The homeopath evaluates mental, emotional, and physical symptoms in order to determine the “totality” of the case. With this information the homeopath then determines the “similimum” or remedy that most closely matches the case.
Most remedies are given one time only, then we wait to allow the animal’s natural healing ability to begin the process of cure. Several remedies may be necessary in the treatment of chronic disease (anything other than trauma, poisonings, acute illnesses, etc.). Follow-up phone consultations will be necessary in order to determine whether or not the remedy is working in a curative manner or whether it’s time to move on to the next remedy.
The initial case-taking appointment will take about ½ to 1½ hours. After this appointment, your animal will be prescribed the first remedy.
Most veterinary homeopaths work very effectively by phone, working with the owner’s local veterinarian when a physical exam is necessary. With homeopathy it’s often more helpful to learn “how” an animal responds to disease symptoms rather than the name of the bacteria or virus.
I encourage everyone to own a copy of Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. Dr. Richard Pitcairn is the “guru” of veterinary homeopathy and has trained most of the veterinary homeopaths in this country.
